DON’T DELAY: PREPARE TODAY!

SALEM’S COMMUNITY EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAMS

Class Begins March 2

A free Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) class begins Tuesday, March 2. The class runs for three hours per night for seven consecutive Tuesday evenings. This is an adult education class for persons who live or work in Salem.

The CERT program helps train volunteers to assist the community when a disastrous event overwhelms or delays the community’s professional response. CERT members can assist others by applying basic response and organizational skills following a disaster until help arrives. CERT skills also apply to daily emergencies. Some of the skills learned in CERT training include:

-Being prepared for disasters that may affect our city

-Working as a team to apply basic fire suppression strategies, resources, and safety measures to extinguish small fires

-Applying techniques for opening airways, controlling bleeding, and treating shock

-Identifying, planning and sizeing-up requirements for potential search and rescue situations

-Using safe techniques for debris removal and victim extrication
